City officials have approved putting a question on the November ballot, asking voters whether they wish to try IRV -- or instant runoff voting.
IRV lets voters register not only a first choice but also rank their other choices. The result is that people who vote for a third-party candidate, who then loses, don't waste their votes. Instead, their other preferences would flow automatically to other candidates, until a winner emerges with a majority of votes.
