FDA Satisfied with Milk from Cloned Cows

Cattle-cloning scientists at the University of Connecticut say milk and meat from cloned animals are safe for human consumption.
The FDA has been waiting for additional evidence on the safety of meat and milk from cloned cows since a National Academy of Sciences report (.pdf) said last year that while the food would not likely make anyone sick, more research should be performed. The Connecticut researchers published their results in a scientific journal on Monday.

["Substantial equivalence" is the criteria the FDA uses to evaluate genetically modified food. "If it looks like milk and it tastes like milk, we will assume it is as safe as milk. This stands in contrast to the "precautionary principle:" "If there is a potential for harmful unforseen consequences, better not to implement the idea."
